Our hearts are very heavy here at Eat this!. We have lost one of our own and a staple of Charleston f&b community. Chris will be greatly missed.
Nearly a week ago Charleston lost Christopher Eugene West. Chris was so special to the community that it has been almost impossible to scroll through any social media feeds without seeing some mention of his life and his untimely death. We all know that the Food & Beverage community in Charleston is a tight-knit group, but when we lose one of our own, we rally. This past week has brought a massive outpouring of grief, love and support of Chris’ family and friends, a fundraiser to help offset the costs of his funeral, and articles in local papers and blogs.
When I was asked to write this I reached out to some of his friends and asked them to describe Chris. The answers were remarkably similar. Adjectives like hysterical, witty, and sarcastic were used, but the one thing that almost everyone said was ‘smart.’ He was so damn smart that I would’ve felt uncomfortable talking to him, except he also possessed a humility and kindness that would’ve never allowed that. He loved the written word and he could quote his favorite authors at the drop of a hat. He loved sports and music and people and booze, and he could speak knowledgeably on any of those subjects.
He was kind, and handsome and he had a great smile and he was perfect behind a bar because the girls loved him and the guys wanted to be his friend. He was the whole package. He is gone too soon and he will be greatly missed by the community, by his fellow writers, by his friends and family, by all of us. Again, he was special.
Rest in peace, Chris. We all wish you could’ve stayed for another round.
